Since its establishment in 1994 Free House Wine & Spirits has strived to maintain its initial goal on delivering to the hospitality trade – and ultimately to the consumer – the best quality products at the most affordable price. The passion for wine that prompted the founding partners, Ted Latimer and Don Bryant, to progress from retail to wholesale distribution has remained undiminished even as the Calgary-based agency expanded to serve all of Canada. Today the portfolio has grown in size and diversity to include some of the wine world’s most exclusive and interesting producers.

The Free House Wine + Spirits BC Sales Team goes to Blasted Church
June 2008 | Okanagan Falls, British Columbia
Abby, Ashlyn, Derrick and Sujinder were recently guests of Evelyn and Chris Campbell at Blasted Church Vineyards in Okanagan Falls for an exclusive tour and tasting with acclaimed winemaker Richard Kanazawa.  It was a chance for the team to sample and discuss the latest releases, as well as going through the barrels to get a glimpse of the future of Blasted Church!  It was universally-agreed that the most recent vintages are among their most accomplished wines to date – and with Richard’s experience, passion, and skill, the best is truly yet to come!  Tasting highlights included the 2007 Gewurtztraminer, the 2007 Chardonnay Musque, the 2006 Merlot, components of the forthcoming 2007 Pinot Noir (to be released this fall), and the limited-production ‘Amen’ Port-de-Merlot (available only at the winery).

The first evening was rounded out by a special dinner courtesy of Joy Road Catering, who prepared a four-course menu paired with the delicious wines of Blasted Church (of course), and featuring locally-grown and organic ingredients.

The next morning, the team was led through the estate vineyards by expert vineyard manager Lisa Wambold, who showcased the key differences between grape varieties, soil types, pruning and trellising techniques.  The Free House sales team was then put to work, removing suckers from the vines and lifting wires into position.  Sounds like fun?  It was!  I think they call it “edutainment”….
